NZ Bus assists Cyclists over the Harbour Bridge
December 12, 2011
Cyclists who have been lobbying for permission to bike over the Auckland Harbour Bridge got their wish granted.
The Telstra Challenge which took place on Sunday 11 December saw around 4000 cyclists pedal their way across the clip-on lanes of the Harbour Bridge guarded by 160 buses from NZ Bus – Metrolink and Northstar business units.
“Thanks to a great team effort, 160 buses were positioned across the Harbour Bridge to provide protection from other motorists and the gathering headwind to cyclists participating in this event” says Zane Fulljames CEO NZ Bus
From 3am on Sunday, 22 drivers and 6 support staff worked tirelessly into the morning to get these buses in position, in time for the start of the race. After the race almost 80 drivers then returned these buses to their respective depots.
Event director Callum McNair said “having NZ Bus provide a bus barrier along the Harbour Bridge worked well. All the guys made it so easy for us and they are just an awesome group to work with.''
“We are pleased that we could assist cyclists in this very cool event. A seamless interaction between all transport modes – walking, cycling, bus, rail and car is important to unlock productivity levels and deliver sustainable lifestyle outcomes” Zane Fulljames CEO NZ Bus went on to say
Once again, a great team effort from NZ Bus in contributing to the success of another first in New Zealand.
