Who Are We?
Our Vision
Our vision is to be the way the people in our communities choose to travel.
History
In November 2005, Infratil acquired the New Zealand public transport interests of Stagecoach plc for $252 million and created NZ Bus to run the operation.
The attraction for Infratil was NZ Bus’s positioning in a sector likely to grow due to social and political pressure for more and better public transport and for less use of the private car. For this to happen, NZ Bus recognised that a comprehensive change in all aspects of its service, its regulation and its relationship with users was required.
Since its purchase by Infratil, NZ Bus has delivered a number of enhancements to the service it offers. Local body partners in Auckland and Wellington including the regional councils have delivered on others.
A combination of continued investment in new and better buses, on-going driver training, better systems and additional real-time information at bus stops and bus priority measures on the road will ensure we provide a better bus service, one that is more reliable, convenient, more frequent and more comfortable – a service that more people will want to use.
Environment
NZ Bus currently has a fleet of over 1,000 buses. We employ approximately 2,000 people and provide between 55 and 66 million trips a year.
In Auckland, we are the principle bus company, with North Star, Metrolink, LINK, GO WEST and Waka Pacific buses serving the region’s public transport needs with over 656 buses covering more than 90 routes.
In Wellington, GO Wellington has a fleet of 223 buses, including Wellington’s iconic trolley buses. We have approximately 290 drivers and other staff. GO Wellington provides services to approximately 20 million people every year.
The Valley Flyer has a fleet of 110 buses, including the Airport Flyer service, and approximately 200 staff members. Each year around 5.6 million people use these services.
In January 2008, NZ Bus purchased NorthBus in Whangarei. In June 2008NorthBus was awarded the tender to provide the urban bus service for Whangarei. Ten new purpose built MAN buses, meeting Euro 4 emission standards, took to the street of Whangarei on 1 July 2008 under the name CityLink.
