Barry Hinkley | Chief Executive Officer

Barry is one of the most experienced bus operators in the industry. Barry’s career commenced in the engineering function of a major National Bus Company subsidiary in 1984. Barry achieved progressive promotions to MD, then Chairman, of Stagecoach subsidiaries. Barry was appointed as Main Board Director of Stagecoach prior to flotation in 1993.

Barry also held roles as Executive Director of Porterbrook (largest UK rail rolling-stock lessor), South West Trains (largest train operating company in the UK), Swebus (t/o £300m), Hong Kong Citybus (t/o £130m), Prestwick Airport and Coach USA (t/o £650). Barry was also appointed as Chairman of nationwide division of major, international transport group (19 subsidiaries, £550m turnover). Barry has maintained strategic advisors roles to many global bus companies with operations throughout New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and the UK.

Ian Grose | Chief Financial Officer

Ian is a finance leader with over 15 years' experience in risk mitigation, financial strategy development and execution. Ian started his career at Deloitte in the United Kingdom and transferred to the Sydney office in 2007. In Deloitte’s audit & advisory team, Ian worked on numerous listed and multinational clients. Ian was Finance Director at Forest Coach Lines for over 3 years where he was a key member of the acquisition and integration team responsible for doubling the number of buses within two years. Whilst at Forest Coach Lines, Ian managed continuous improvement initiatives relating to IT systems, risk management including the transition from family to corporate systems, implementation of ISO certifications and was a true business partner across the operational and engineering functions of the business.

Ian is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.

Management Team

The Executive Team is supported by a high quality Management Team which combines strong industry experience with diversity brought from other industries:

Ian Gordon, GM Fleet

Ian joined as the GM Fleet in May 2014. Prior to this appointment, Ian was Rail Assets Manager at GWRC. He has held other senior roles across various local and central government agencies including the Ministry of Defence. Ian brings significant strategic capability to the Executive Team and is dedicated to the fleet and maintenance teams’ roadmap.

Kim Payton, National Health and Safety Manager

Prior to joining NZ Bus in 2017 Kim has worked in both public and private sector health and safety roles, and uses that experience to lead, engage and motivate others in the achievement of our organisational health and safety objectives. She is responsible for the management of our Accredited Employer Programme with ACC, and is a trained investigator using the Incident Causation Analysis Methodology (ICAM). Kim is accredited Technician status with the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management (NZISM) and holds the National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) General Certificate in Health and Safety.

Anthony James, National Commercial Manager

Anthony is a senior transport professional and joined NZ Bus in 2014. He has over 15 years’ experience in public transport planning, strategic business planning, operational delivery and stakeholder management in London, New Zealand and Australia. Anthony offers proven transport and strategic business planning, initiative development, project and contract management, commercial and operational expertise and team leadership skills.

Simon Blunt, GM Finance

Simon is a CPA finance professional who joined NZ Bus as General Manager Finance in Oct 2018. Since returning to New Zealand in 2006, he has continued to provide business advisory, strategic planning and performance management expertise. Simon provided finance leadership across the NZ Post Group’s transformation programme, international and domestic business units. Prior to that, supporting the BP NZ’s Retail, Commercial and Logistics networks.
