Doctor Mike Kinski - Non-Executive Chairman, NZ Bus

Mike was appointed Non-Executive Chairman of NZ Bus on 2nd September 2019.

Mike is a very experienced senior business man who has worked in a range of business sectors in both the UK and overseas. His last full time role was between 2000 and 2015 (16 years) as Managing Director at Terra Firma Capital Partners, one of Europe’s largest Private Equity businesses. In August 2015, he retired but agreed to become a non-executive Director working on the boards of a number of Terra Firma portfolio companies for a further transition year. In 2016 he embarked on developing his NED portfolio in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

His past roles include Director of Nomura International plc, Group Chief Executive of Stagecoach plc, Chief Executive Operations- Scottish Power plc,  Chairman and Chief Executive-Southern Water plc, Chairman and Chief Executive-Manweb Electricity plc and Personnel Director and main Board Director-Jaguar Cars Ltd. Mike is past President of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, a Professor at Middlesex University Business School and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Middlesex University in 2004. He is also CEO in residence at Middlesex University Business School.

Barry Hinkley – Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer

Barry was appointed Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of NZ Bus on 2nd September 2019.

Barry is one of the most experienced bus operators in the industry. Barry’s career commenced in the engineering function of a major National Bus Company subsidiary in 1984. Barry achieved progressive promotions to MD, then Chairman, of Stagecoach subsidiaries. Barry was appointed as Main Board Director of Stagecoach prior to flotation in 1993. Barry also held roles as Executive Director of Porterbrook (largest UK rail rolling-stock lessor), South West Trains (largest train operating company in the UK), Swebus (t/o £300m), Hong Kong Citybus (t/o £130m), Prestwick Airport and Coach USA (t/o £650). Barry was also appointed as Chairman of a nationwide division of a major, international transport group (19 subsidiaries, £550m turnover). Barry has maintained strategic advisor roles to many global bus companies with operations throughout New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and the UK.

Peter McKenzie – Executive Director

Peter was appointed Executive Director of NZ Bus on 2nd September 2019.

Peter has an extensive background in the bus industry across Australia and New Zealand having worked as an operator, industry advisor and consultant to Government and local authorities for over 20 years. Peter has previously held senior executive positions in both private and publicly listed passenger transport organisations.  As a consultant, Peter has completed several complex and high profile projects in Australian capital cities and in New Zealand.  Peter’s executive role at NZ Bus focusses on assisting the management team on strategic projects and liaising with key stakeholders on business and transport development initiatives.

John White – Non-Executive Director

John was appointed Non-Executive Director of NZ Bus on 2nd September 2019.

John is a founding partner of Next Capital and was a director of Next Capital’s two previous bus investments, Go Bus in New Zealand and Forest Coach Lines in Australia. John is currently a director of Next Capital’s investments in Funlab and Noisette and has previously been a director of its investments in Vitaco, Hirepool, Independent Pub Group, Onsite and Infinite Aged Care. John previously worked for Macquarie Group, in its private equity fund, in the corporate finance group at Deutsche Bank and at Ferrier Hodgson. John holds degrees in Commerce and Law from the University of NSW, is a fellow of Finsia and until recently, chaired the AVCAL Council.

James Murphy – Non-Executive Director

James was appointed Non-Executive Director of NZ Bus on 2nd September 2019.

James is a partner of Next Capital and was a director of Next Capital’s two previous bus investments, Go Bus in New Zealand and Forest Coach Lines in Australia. James is currently a director of Next Capital’s investments in Funlab, Lynch Group, Alpha Group and iSeek and has previously been a director of its investments in Scottish Pacific and Infinite Aged Care. James previously worked for UBS Investment Bank, Grant Samuel and Accenture. James holds a degree in Commerce from the University of NSW and is a CFA.
